To give skills in the correct methods of slinging and signalling.

Outcomes

At the end of the course the operative should be able to:
• Understand the requirements of the relevant legislation
• Establish the physical properties of loads and communicate this information to the crane operator
• Select appropriate lifting tackle and attach and detach it correctly and safely
• Direct the actions of a crane moving loads of various weights and dimensions, giving clear and unambiguous signals and in such a manner as to ensure the safety of personnel and plant determine the serviceability of lifting tackle and maintain and store it correctly

Knowledge

At the end of the course the operative should have an
adequate knowledge of:
• The duties and responsibilities, as required by statute, of a slinger, signaller
• Potential hazards associated with crane operation and how to overcome them
• The effects of load movement on the stability of a crane
• Methods of establishing weights, centre of gravity and dimensions of loads
• The effect of varying the angles of multi leg slings and how to calculate their safe working loads
• The standard code of signals
• Operator problems of crane control
• The factors to consider when planning a lift
• Crane safety devices
• The safe use of specific items of lifting equipment
